Somers Point Historical Society Grants will be made to juniors or seniors who are Somers Point residents and who are attending one of the following schools: Mainland Regional, Chartertech, Holy Spirit, St. Augustine's Prep, OLMA, Pilgrim Academy, Atlantic Christian School, Trocki Hebrew Academy, Atlantic County High School, ACIT, etc. Students being home schooled are also eligible to apply.

First and second grants will be awarded for $1000.00 and $500.00 respectively. Students will conduct a research project on the history of Somers Point. The finished project could be in thesis form, an audio visual presentation or other suitable format. Content about Somers Point must be significant. The end result must be a project which may be used by other students and members of the community and would become the property of the Somers Point Historical Society. The judges will approve the topics.

The topics must be presented by December 1. Projects will be judged on a competitive basis. The project must be completed by May 1st. Awards will be made at the end of the year ceremony at the student's respective school. Students will be asked to submit proof of residency as well as grade level.

Student Grant Award

 

September 12, 3:00 PM - Richard Somers Day celebrated on the grounds of Somers Mansion

Somers Point will honor Richard Somers, native son hero from the Barbary Wars in 1800 at a ceremony on September 12, 3:00 PM, at Somers Mansion. Parking is available at Gregory's, Mac's old lot, and Footmarks. All are invited and encouraged to attend to learn about his life and service to our country. Chip Reid from Annapolis, who is writing a book about the Intrepid, will be the main speaker with several other speakers on the life of Richard Somers. The Remembering Richard Somers Day is sponsored by the Somers Point Historical Society and Liberty and Prosperity. Liberty and Prosperity is also sponsoring a fund-raising event at Gregory's Restaurant following the event. Cost is $20 per person. Call 609-927-7333 to get your ticket. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Council Chambers of City Hall.
