War of 1812 Marker
The plaque is dedicated to the 117 men who served as volunteers in the War of 1812. A sand fort was erected near here by the Gloucester County Brigade of New Jersey Volunteers as a defense against enemy ships. A cannon was mounted here and there was a guard there 24 hours a day to protect the town. The brigade was headed by John R. Scull. The fort disappeared in the 1880’s as Bay Avenue became developed.
